Dale and I traveled to the Shrine of Lourdes on a Pilgrimage with the Order of Malta. Each year the worldwide Order gathers for a week to provide spiritual and psychological care and comfort to hundreds of Malades (1,200 this year), who suffer from terminal or horrific chronic illness. The week includes prayers, Masses, processions, immersions in the waters at the Grotto, as well as some fun activities in the counrtyside.
Dale and I were powerfully moved by the experience of deep connections with our six Malades. Despite their tragic situations, they reflected great serenity, devotion and joy at the love and care of our team. They loved us and we loved them.
The Lourdes experience is exceptional. The site is spectacular in its setting at the foot of the Pyrenees, the architecture is amazing, the incredibly moving religious ceremonies and rituals, the music, the homilies, the rosaries – all combine to transport one into a state of beautiful spirituality, love and care giving.
