In the summer of 1968 I went to New Orleans to work for Boeing as part of the team of engineers and scientists designing and building the Saturn V moon rocket for the Apollo Program of NASA. New Orleans has a special place in my heart as by father was born in New Orleans and his family had been there since ancestors immigrated there in the 19th century from southern France.

New Orleans is a magical place, with the French Quarter an outstanding example of preservation as well as the center of the music and food for which the city is famous. My workmates and roommates and me took advantage of the opportunity to sample everything we could afford. It was a time when you could walk around all night safely in the Quarter, and much of the vibrant culture was unchanged from earlier decades.
