Msgr. Dillion is a native of Ireland, but had never been to Northern Ireland, nor had he been to Scotland, which I had told him was of interest to me. So a trip was created for the “Usual Suspects” to start in Dublin, drive across the border into Northern Ireland for a day in Belfast, then across the channel on a ferry to Scotland. Even though the killing stopped some years ago, Belfast still had a dark air about it. The wall is still there and you sensed the anger is not far from the surface. We toured Scotland, taking in terrific vistas, visited numerous castles, abbeys and palaces loaded with historical events, tasted the scotch at a distillery, and came across a local bagpipe rally. The end of the trip was in Edinburgh, where we saw the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, a spectacular parade of military bands from all over the world in a stadium next to Edinburgh Castle.
