Dale and I visited Oaxaca, Mexico, in the fall of 2023 where we experienced a week of activities surrounding Dia de Los Muertos, or Day of the Dead. In Mexican culture, the dead have divine permission to visit friends and relatives on Earth once a year. The living welcome the souls of the departed with offerings of flowers, specially prepared foods, candles and incense. DOD is not a morbid occasion, but one of peace and happiness. We experienced the all night vigils in the cemeteries, the incredible Comparsas (parades) with masked characters, music and dancing, visits to private homes to view the altars for the dead and other elements of this most important of Mexican cultural celebrations. The photographic opportunity was extraordinary.
