The Atlanta Steeplechase was held for 52 years before ceasing operations in 2017 due to declining interest and support. It was a great social event held at Kingston Downs with patrons wining and dining in style in tents and on grass terraces overlooking the course. Patrons would transport their finest table service and decorations and provide sumptuous food, while sporting fancy outfits worthy of a race outing. Women made or bought elaborate hats and entered themselves in a contest for the most remarkable hat. We went with friends from the Peachtree Racket Club and entertained dear friends from Memphis.
I had followed thoroughbred racing in college and my Navy days, so it was a thrill to go down to the rail and watch the magnificent horses dash to the finish line.
We were blessed with glorious skies and temperatures, so it was an experience to savor.
